The Logging Truck Whose Trailer Carried Its Own Caterpillar
Most heavy rigs leave every bit of the work to the tractor. This one did not. A storied logging hauler gave its leading trailer a diesel of its own, a 14.6-liter Caterpillar V8 set into the span dividing that trailer's axles. The motor was not along for the ride. It helped the rig gather speed under load and added its own muscle when the whole train had to slow, which is the moment a driver with that much weight behind the cab cares about most. Counted together with the engine up front, the rig sent nine hundred horsepower to the road. For collectors of working iron, that is the kind of answer only a hard job and a confident builder produce, and it is the reason the truck is still spoken of.
