Three Firms Return an Eichler to Its Original Clarity
Two AD100 practices, Geremia Design and Terremotto, joined Marsden Architecture to restore a house by Joseph Eichler, the builder whose postwar houses are still the clearest American example of modernism built for ordinary family life. The clients are a couple whose children have recently left home. The design starts at the floor: the terrazzo sets the colors for the rest of the house, and its tones lean soft, natural and feminine. In an Eichler, where walls of glass let the light and the yard into every room, the floor carries more of the design than it would in most houses, and the team treated it that way. No price or address is on the record, and none is given here.
